    • The Château de la Mercerie: A unique architectural folly in Charente

Just 20 minutes from Angoulême, the Château de la Mercerie is a must-see for tourists in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Nicknamed the " Little Versailles of Charente," this unfinished masterpiece is the result of the audacious dream of the Réthoré brothers, who dedicated their lives to building a monumental palace in a striking neo-classical style.

A jewel of heritage saved from ruin

Long neglected, the site has undergone a spectacular renaissance since 2011. Far from being a static monument, the château is being restored daily thanks to an exceptional community effort. Visitors discover a gallery of azulejos (Portuguese glazed tiles) unique in France, exquisitely crafted woodwork, and majestic reception rooms. The experience extends into a 60-hectare park, home to an exceptional rose garden, offering an ideal bucolic escape for nature lovers.

A connected immersion into the heart of history

Open from late March to early November, the castle offers a modern experience: self -guided tours with QR codes in French and English allow for interactive exploration of each room. For those who prefer a more personal touch, volunteer guides passionately share the secrets of this Charente "folly." Online ticketing makes planning your visit easy, and groups are welcome year-round by reservation.

A place for living and community events

The Château de la Mercerie is much more than a museum. It's a vibrant community hub that comes alive with the changing seasons. The association organizes popular events such as the Easter egg hunt, the giant paella on July 13th, and the large flea market on the first Sunday of August. Heritage Days in September and the Fine Crafts Fair in November round out this program, with every proceeds going directly towards saving the building. The site also offers the possibility of reserving its spaces for private events and unforgettable experiences.

Want to go back in time? Book an unusual escape game at the Château de la Mercerie to solve the puzzles and free the spirit that haunts the castle.

I visited during the craft fair, but the fog was incredibly thick, so I couldn't see the entire monument. No matter, I'll come back when the sun is shining.

Surprising, gigantic, whimsical, and very informative. Guided tours are recommended to better understand the purpose of this splendid contemporary residence with its regal architecture.
