    • LUSSAUD CASTLE IN CHAMPAGNE-VIGNY

Château de Lussaud in Champagne-Vigny, between Barbezieux and Angoulême: discover its history, its architecture, guided tours and the surrounding Charente landscapes.

      History and architecture

The Château de Lussaud, located in Champagne-Vigny, between Barbezieux and Angoulême, is a residence whose origins date back to the 15th century. It was successively owned by several families of magistrates and minor nobles. Pierre Pascalut, Lord of Lussaud and mayor of Angoulême in 1534, left his mark on local history through his influence and role in the magistracy. His son, Pierre de Corlieu, squire and Lord of Lussaud, participated in the affairs of the province during the reign of Henry III and served in the Wars of Religion. At that time, the château was a stronghold, and gun ports are still visible today.

The château retains important architectural features, such as 15th and 18th-century fireplaces, an 18th-century bread oven, and five round towers that overlook the Charente countryside. The building also displays numerous engravings of guilds and traces of pilgrims on the Way of St. James, bearing witness to the religious and cultural history of the region.

      Restaurants and tours

The castle is currently undergoing restoration, aiming to recreate the architecture that made it one of the region's notable heritage sites. The perimeter walls have been reinforced and the towers restored to their original appearance. This work preserves the site's authenticity while also opening it up to organized group visits. Pets are welcome upon request, and the grounds can be explored on guided tours, which offer a detailed overview of its history and architecture.

The castle is open daily from May 1st to September 30th, offering visitors the opportunity to discover it in a peaceful, natural setting. Photographic exhibitions trace the progress of the restoration work and highlight the connections between Alfred de Vigny and the Clavaud family, emphasizing the site's cultural and literary significance.

      Local heritage and culture

Lussaud Castle is situated in a region rich in heritage. It is a significant example of the manor houses of the Charente, and its history is closely linked to that of neighboring towns such as Blanzac and Pérignac. The Lussaud mill, once a source of income for the lords, recalls the economic and agricultural role of the estate over the centuries. The surrounding woods, often explored by the poet Alfred de Vigny, offer an ideal setting for walks and discovering the Charente landscape.

      Discover around the castle

Within a 30 km radius, several hiking trails allow visitors to traverse landscapes of hills, forests, and valleys crossed by rivers such as the Tardoire. They can explore the historic villages of Barbezieux, Angoulême, and Blanzac, discover local markets, small producers, and artisans. The trails also offer views of cultural and natural sites, as well as the religious and medieval heritage of the Charente region, enriching the tourist experience around the Château de Lussaud.
