In the 12th century AD, God entrusted to Pierre de Castillon, Viscount of Aubeterre, the art of revealing his residence in the small village of Aubeterre sur Dronne, perched on a white stone cliff which gave it its name, Alba terra , overlooking a loop of the Dronne. The believers set to work, digging out the limestone cliffs. Today, visitors discover, dazzled, this troglodyte church patiently carved into the rock : an architectural and spiritual marvel. This medieval masterpiece, carved directly into the cliff in the 12th century, is the tallest of the nine troglodyte churches in France and undoubtedly one of the most spectacular. Discovering this unmissable place in Charente is like plunging into a journey through the centuries, in the heart of a mysterious and captivating atmosphere.

A Monumental and Historical Construction Site

The history of this monolithic church begins in the 8th century and continued in the 12th century according to a basilical plan. Pierre de Castillon, lord of the Aubeterre castle, returning from the first crusade (1096-1099), initiated this monumental project to accommodate the relics of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. This intense religious context, marked by pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, favored the creation of this unique building. The project, which lasted twenty years, required the excavation of 9,000 m³ of stone, equivalent to nearly three Olympic swimming pools. In the past, an internal corridor directly linked the church to the castle, allowing the lords to access it discreetly.

A Grandiose and Mysterious Architecture

Invisible from the outside, the church impresses upon entry. The impression is that of entering a cave. Visitors are immediately transported by the impressive volume, feeling the freshness of the cliffs and the mystical atmosphere that reigns in this place of contemplation. The church extends over several floors, and a series of 80 rock-cut steps leads to a circular gallery located 18 meters high, offering breathtaking views of the interior of the sanctuary.

A Place of Contemplation and Recollection

The heart of the church houses a six-meter-high hexagonal reliquary, the most beautiful element of the building, inspired by the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. This reliquary, carved from a single block of stone, is a striking testimony to Romanesque art. In its center, a cavity decorated with a Greek cross contains pieces of the Holy Cross, brought back by Pierre de Castillon during the first crusade. Pilgrims on their way to Compostela came to meditate there, attracted by the powerful protective symbolism of the relics.

A Place Steeped in History

The troglodyte church of Saint-Jean is not only a place of worship, but also an important historical site. In the Middle Ages, Charente was a strategic region on pilgrimage and trade routes. The church, with its impressive dimensions — 27 meters long, 16 meters wide, and 20 meters high — testifies to the religious and social importance of the region at that time. Completion in a single work campaign is an architectural feat which mobilized significant human and material resources. Coming out of the church, take the small staircase which goes down to the right. Under the central nave, a crypt was discovered in 1961, probably reserved for the canons. This underground sanctuary, accessible by a corridor decorated with arcades, leads to a small apse containing an altar carved in stone and two sculpted seats.
