The discreet Saint-Romain Church stands in the heart of Villebois-Lavalette, a small town in Charente with a rich history. Although its exact history is sometimes unclear, it is known that this building has undergone many transformations over the centuries.
Over the following centuries, the church was enlarged and modified to adapt to the needs of the population. The Wars of Religion of the 16th century severely damaged it, requiring partial reconstruction. It was during this time that the façade was renovated in a more classical style and Gothic elements were added to the interior, such as vaults and windows. The bells were also replaced, and the oldest dates from the 17th century.
The true treasure of the Church of Saint-Romain lies in its interior, where a set of medieval frescoes was discovered a few years ago. These paintings, which depict biblical scenes and figures of saints, are a rare testament to the sacred art of the period. Despite the ravages of time, their subtle colors and elegant lines offer a unique insight into the craftsmanship of the artists of the time.
