In the heart of the Charente region, the Abbey of Saint-Étienne de Bassac stands majestically on the peaceful banks of the river. Founded in the 11th century by Benedictine monks, it was an important spiritual and intellectual center of the region. Its architecture, which harmoniously blends Romanesque and Gothic styles, bears witness to the different periods of its construction and restoration.
Its emblematic square bell tower and the remains of its cloister are particularly noteworthy, inviting contemplation. The abbey's lodgings, built in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the presbytery, erected in the 17th century, complete this exceptional ensemble. Partially destroyed during the French Revolution, the abbey was patiently restored in the 19th century.
Today, the Abbey of Saint-Étienne de Bassac is not only a place of worship, but also a dynamic cultural center. It hosts concerts, exhibitions and workshops, bringing the old stones back to life to the rhythm of artistic creation.
