The Château de Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire

Located in the town of the same name, this former medieval fortress, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, is magnificent with its imposing presence and two tall, round towers topped by a single roof. Numerous restoration projects have ensured its preservation and renovation, first in the 15th century under the La Rochefoucauld family, and then again in 2015. The latest work has transformed the Château de Barbezieux into a new theater, a superb cultural venue that is vibrant throughout the year. Guided tours are offered (dates vary depending on the season), as well as a virtual tour to explore the castle's evolution through the ages.

The Château de la Mercerie, the "little Versailles of the Charente"

An unfinished dream, transformed into an incredibly rich heritage to visit! This description perfectly describes the Château de la Mercerie, a former 19th century neo-Gothic manor house purchased in 1924 by brothers Alphonse and Raymond Réthoré. Their goal? To create a new Versailles, a project that never came to fruition, leaving behind a rich collection of precious woods, Italian marbles, azulejos tiles, and Portuguese earthenware, all preserved behind a dazzling white façade.

Renovated and enhanced by the inhabitants of Magnac-Lavalette-Villars, the Château de la Mercerie is today an unmissable site in Charente.

The Château de Chalais, cradle of the Talleyrand-Périgord family

You'll see it from afar, so imposing is the castle with its 6,000 square meters, dominating the town from its rocky spur. Open to the public, the Château de Chalais has nevertheless been owned by the comedian Yves Lecoq since December 2011, a passionate lover of old buildings who is patiently renovating this historical landmark. The 21 rooms accessible during the tour are furnished by him with period furniture, offering a true journey into the past.

Lussaud Castle, "the forest of wolves"

Founded in the 15th century, the Château de Lussaud now offers visitors a journey through time via a photo exhibition that recounts its history and restoration. Its mysterious allure, nestled among the surrounding woods, is captivating, while its five round towers rise elegantly above the Charente countryside. This restored château retains its gun ports, period fireplaces, an 18th century bread oven, and stone carvings by the Compagnons du Devoir (a French guild of craftsmen).

The Cognac Castle

This ancient fortress, founded in the 10th century, served many purposes over the years. Its first function was as a defensive structure to repel Norman invasions, before it became an illustrious residence in the 15th century and the birthplace of King Francis 1. On the verge of demolition, it was purchased by Baron Otard, owner of the Cognac House, who succumbed to the charm of its thick walls, perfect for aging eaux-de-vie. The Château de Cognac, now the Maison de Cognac, is a true institution, open to visitors year-round, offering comprehensive and varied guided tours that reveal the history of this iconic monument and the art of cognac production.
